App Review: Remote for the iPod Touch

25 Jul 03:03
As part of my continuing series reviewing App Store apps on the iPod Touch (see my prior post for details), today I will review Remote by Apple. Remote is a free application designed to allow you to control your iTunes library on any computer or your AppleTV. It does this apparently by sending the commands via your wifi, so the remote works anywhere you have access to your wireless network.

ColdFusion 9 - What We Know (so far)

24 Jul 03:57
Since I got the obligatory pricing rant out of the way (well, ok, it was more complicated than that), I figured it was time to focus on the features we have already heard about regarding ColdFusion 9 (codenamed Centaur). Most of what we know so far was revealed during this year's CFUnited Adobe Keynote, though a couple items were made public during the extremely brief cf.Objective() Adobe Keynote.

Good Enough to Touch? Apps for the iPod Touch

24 Jul 00:42
Many times the iPod Touch feels like the secret, illegitimate brother of the iPhone - not the least of which is that we have now been forced to pay a rather high price for two software updates over a short period. For obvious reasons, the iPhone and its new 3G version have garnered most of the attention of the press and, apparently, Apple.

Luis Majano on ColdBox Presentation Recording

17 Jul 12:58
Tonight Luis Majano presented to the Boston CFUG on the ColdBox framework. You can view the recording here. While I have not tried ColdBox yet, I was really impressed by the breadth of functionality the framework contains. Luis and the ColdBox team seem to have a great attention to detail that reflects very highly on every aspect of the framework shown.

ColdFusion Open-Source Update - July 14, 2008

15 Jul 12:01
Three new projects and five updates this week. I am pretty sick today so I will make this short. The big news this week was probably the MXUnit 1.0 release but it was a very busy week overall. New Releases and Updates New Project: cf_scriptalizer Updates to cf_scriptalizer and InstantSpot.com Aaron has updates his tag as well as implements it on InstantSpot. Problem: WAY too many javascript files.

Using Custom Tab Classes with the Flex TabBar

10 Jul 11:31
The Flex TabBar class offers a lot of built-in functionality but on occassion you may need to extend the underlying components. In my case, I needed to add a custom property to the underlying tabs within the TabBar. While it is obvious and straightforward to extend the TabBar class as you would any other class, it was not so obvious (at least to me) how to get access to extend the underlying tabs it creates. Here is how I was able (with a little help) to do it (be gentle, I am by no means a "Flexpert" yet).

ColdFusion Open-Source Update - July 7, 2008

8 Jul 02:15
Four new projects and three updates this week. I am writing this from hot and humid Miami. A fairly busy week considering the stateside holiday though something like 90% of the posts this week come from 3 sources I think. New Releases and Updates New Project: Code Scanner Code Scanner Update A change to an included Access database rather than MySQL. Announcing Code ScannerĀ 1.0! Will Tomlinson releases this new code review tool.

Turning TinyMCE On and Off On the Fly

2 Jul 23:09
WYSIWYG tools like TinyMCE are great and can make formatting HTML text areas a breeze. Nonetheless, they can also do some things that you occasionally don't want. For instance, TinyMCE often "cleans" your code in ways that you may not intend or want. to solve this, I recently added a feature to my Mango Blog installation that allows me to not only turn TinyMCE on and off, but also remembers my preference (on a field by field basis) when I return.

ColdFusion Open-Source Update - June 30, 2008

1 Jul 09:07
Two new projects and four updates this week. Did you, dear reader, realize that I have been doing this weekly update for over two years now? Well, neither did I. I am not sure why I was curious, but I was and it turns out that the the very first update was on April 30, 2006. I think in two years I have missed a couple weeks, usually on Christmas. I thought there was a lot to talk about back then, when there were probably no more than 100 projects.

ColdFusion Open-Source Update - June 23, 2008

24 Jun 04:26
Five new releases and four updates this week. It was great to see everyone at CFUnited, and there were a number of presentations covering open-source projects. I would actually love to see more, in particular covering some of the lesser known projects. Perhaps this should be a goal for next year at both CFUnited and cf.Objective(). I'd be happy to present some of them myself.
